Just For Today Challenge, Day 22: Get More Quality Sleep

How are you sleeping these days? You can use more sleep, you say? Good, because Day 22 of the Just For Today Challenge – 31 Days To A Better You it’s time to get more quality sleep.

I know what you’re thinking – FINALLY a reason to sleep in :-)

man resting

It’s not so much a reason to sleep in however, but a reason to go to bed earlier! Ahh, there’s the rub. It wouldn’t be much of a challenge for you to just to lie in bed longer in the morning, now would it?

You need to get more quality sleep by going to bed earlier than your normal time and ensuring that you are getting more than 8 hours per sleep per night. That’s today’s real Challenge.

Feeling sluggish lately? Getting enough sleep will help you concentrate on your tasks more.

How stressed are you? One of the best ways to reduce your stress is to get enough quality sleep each night. It gives your body a chance to recuperate from the stressful “fight or flight” reactions when you are stressed out.

Are you happy with your energy level? You need to get enough sleep each night so that you have the energy necessary to perform your everyday tasks. We can’t have you falling asleep at the wheel or the computer, now can we? I don’t need to tell you how dangerous a lack of sleep can be. Especially, as that deficit grows over time as you try to fit more and more into your day, thus sacrificing your precious sleep. Thinking that you will make it up the deficit of sleep on the weekends won’t work either. Your body will make it known that you need sleep, one way or another.

Are you wanting to lose some weight? Surprisingly, getting enough sleep can help you there, too. Recent news articles have shown that getting enough sleep at night can help you shed some pounds. You don’t eat while you’re sleeping, plus you are giving your body a break from food so that it can digest what’s already there.

Now that we know how important getting enough sleep is, how can we get more sleep? For those of us who do not have any medical reasons for insomnia, there are some things that you can do to ensure that you get a good night’s sleep:

  • Go to bed earlier than your normal time.
  • Ensure that you have a regular “sleep time” ritual that you follow each night, allowing your body and mind to recognize that it’s time for bed.
  • Don’t eat a heavy meal or drink any alcohol right before you go to bed.
  • Having any caffeine a few hours before bed time will mean can affect you so much that you won’t be able to sleep.
  • Make sure that your bedroom is full of distractions, has low light and is warm enough or cool enough for you to sleep in.
  • Stop worrying. Worry does nothing to help your situation. Most of what you worry about will won’t come true anyways. Have faith.
  • Get enough exercise so that you are physically tired.
  • Turn off the TV and sleep. Don’t lie in bed watching TV or have it running in the background while you are trying to sleep. I’m particularly bad for this as I like the background noise when I’m trying to sleep.

Are you with me? We’re going to go to bed earlier tonight so that we are getting roughly 8 hours of sleep tonight.

Let me know how you feel tomorrow about getting more sleep by leaving a comment. I’m looking forward to completing this Challenge tonight :-)

Great tips Karen

I’ve been having a hard time with sleep recently. I’d gotten in to habit of staying up to work later and later and then because I still needed to get up for the work the following day I ended up getting less and less sleep.

So at the start of this week I started getting up at 5am. I love the quiet of the mornings, I can exercise, meditate and do a bit of work before the family gets up and we all need to get ready for school and work.

I get a lot of ideas at night time so a good way that I store this these and stop worrying about them is to have a note pad by my bed so as soon as an idea comes in I can quickly write it down and get it out of my head. I found that if I do this I get a much better sleep.

I’m also a bit like you and like noise while falling asleep – to get round this I’ve got an app on my iPod Touch that plays rain sounds for a predetermined length of time. This works a treat for me and helps me to get off to sleep quickly. There a loads of similar apps out there that do the same thing but have different sounds (and they’re usually free!)

Happy sleeping

Welcome Ben,

Sorry to hear that you have been having a hard time sleeping lately. I can totally relate to working late on the site and then going to work the next morning groggy.

Looks like you’ve already completed my Day 3 Challenge of Waking Up Earlier :-)

We think alike – I keep a pad of paper and pen by my bed, too. You never know when an idea for a post will strike you. The other night, it was around 2:00 am for me and I had to get out of bed to jot down a good idea.

That’s a cool app! What’s it called? Aren’t you afraid of draining your batteries playing it?

Thanks,
Karen

Not it only runs for about 45 mins so doesn’t really touch the battery :)

Works a treat!

Oh, Karen,
This is dear to my heart. I as long as I can remember have had poor quality sleep. I sometimes just can’t get my mind to stop thinking. It’s not worrying about the future, as sometimes recalling the past. I will carefully see where I can improve.

Gordie,

Believe me, I know how easy it is to think about the past and what has been, what could have been, and what should have been. But, you can’t do anything about the past. It’s over, finished, finito!

Your present needs you to be present, in all aspects. Good luck!

Heh…sleep… I’m at that magical age where it doesn’t seem to matter how much of it I get (or how little), I’ll still be much the same in the morning. That said, this week I’ve been trying to go to bed at around 12 (instead of 1am onwards), and getting up at 7am. So far, it’s been much easier getting up in the morning than going to bed early!

Too much entertainment at night lol. Internet, it’s a curse (and a blessing, naturally) :P

Heather!

Must be nice to be so young :-) I can barely remember pulling all-nighters in school and then going to class the next day. I could never pull that off these days (not without some serious napping).

Enjoy it while you can! :-)

Hehe, well it looks like I might lose that ability in the next year or so – so believe me I am :)

And now for the important question; Did you go to bed early? :P

Of course I did. I’ve been busy writing these articles every night this week and staying up working on the site, so I desperately needed a good night’s sleep last night. Slept in this morning a little, too :-)

Yes, enjoy it while you can…..
