I can’t believe that this is the last day of the Just For Today Challenge – 31 Days To A Better You. The last 31 days have flown by!

We find ourselves at the very last Challenge. Today’s Challenge was the hardest by far for me to write as this is my last chance to make an impact on our lives during this Challenge. It was very difficult to come up with the last Challenge as there are so many others Just For Today changes that we could have done to make a difference in our lives that it was hard for me to just pick just one. But, I think that today’s Challenge to Suspend Reality For Today deserves a special place as it is definitely something that, if conquered, can make a HUGE impact on our lives.
What do I mean by suspend reality? I’m talking about what you feel when you want to ask that girl or guy out but something stops you. It’s when you have a life-long dream but you convince yourself that you can’t go after that dream. It’s when you think you deserve a raise, but something always stops you from asking for one. It makes us rethink our decisions to change for the better.
Of course, I’m talking about the scariest four letters in the English language F-E-A-R. It’s our fear that stops us from going after what we want in life and which holds us back from giving 100% of ourselves.
Too many of us are not living our dreams because we are living our fears. – Les Brown
Try to suspend what your reality is telling you today. Your reality is only your perception of it. If you are telling yourself you can’t do something because of your circumstances, that’s your fear talking. After all, I’m sure that with over 6 billion people on the planet someone somewhere who has the same circumstances as you has figured out how to do what you want to do in life. If they didn’t let their fear stop them and figured a way, then so can you!
You don’t believe that you can attain your financial goal? Why? Because your reality is telling you that you’re not good enough, smart enough or deserve it? That’s your fear trying to convince you – don’t let it get the better of you. Suspend reality today and believe that you are good enough, you are smart enough and you do deserve to have everything you want in life. Move past your fear and figure out how you can accomplish your goal.
We can suspend reality and take action today on moving towards success. I bet you’ll find what you were so scared of, isn’t that scary after all. We tend to build up fear in our minds and this can paralyze us from taking positive actions.
The only thing keeping you from getting what you want are the stories you’re telling yourself about why you can’t have it. – Anthony Robbins
This is easy to say and very hard to do, believe me I know. A lot of the time we can be our worst enemies and give in to the fear. We come up with all sorts of reasons not to do things in our lives that will better us which sound totally plausible, but are really irrational – again it’s our fear speaking. Isn’t it true that we can convince ourselves of almost anything? What story are you telling yourself right now for why you can’t go after your dream?
What can we do about it? Well, we can try to suspend reality for one. Act as if you have no fear. I’m not talking about jumping out of a plane without a parachute – gravity is very real. I’m talking about not believing everything you tell yourself on why you can’t do what you really want to do in life.
Do what you fear, and the death of fear is certain – Anthony Robbins
We can acknowledge our fears. We are fearful of failing, of rejection, of success, of being laughed at.
Okay, now that we know what we are scared of, what can we do to mitigate those perceived fears? Can we try as hard as we can and be as prepared as much as we can so that the chance of failure isn’t as great? Can we accept that we are only human and will be rejected at some point in our lives? Who goes through life with a perfect track record? No one I know does. Can we accept that in some things we will fail and in others we will succeed? We have a good chance of either one happening. Can you live with those odds? If you’re fearful that you might actually succeed, are you able to live with the consequences?
You can conquer almost any fear if you will only make up your mind to do so. For remember, fear doesn’t exist anywhere except in the mind. – Dale Carnegie
Carnegie had the right idea. Change your mind (e.g. suspend what your reality is telling you) about fear. Fear isn’t real. It’s what you attach to situations or possible outcomes. Remove the perceived fear and you’ll be able to move forward in your life.
What are you going to do today, despite your fear? Share with us by leaving a comment below. Thanks!
Don’t forget to come back tomorrow for a review of the entire Just For Today 31 Day Challenges. I’m very interested in your feedback on how you did with the challenges.

Last week, on a whim, I decided to call a friend I hadn’t seen in a year and ask her out to dinner.
I was pretty scared about it. Since we hadn’t given much news to each other in a year, I thought there was a good chance she would decline the invitation. I’m horrible at keeping in touch and my friends sometimes mistakenly perceive that as not caring.
But then I thought… What is the worst thing that can happen? That she declines the invitation. I’d be a bit sad but I could live with that. What’s the second worst thing that can happen? That the dinner is boring to death because we don’t find enough things to discuss. We used to work together and talk mostly about work, so there was a chance that this would happen too. I was prepared to live with that.
So how did it go? Beyond my greatest expectations. She was very enthusiastic about the invitation and we both had a great time, so much in fact that we committed to doing it again soon.
My challenge for today? To kill my fear of leaving this personal story on this blog. Seriously, what’s the worst thing that can happen?

So glad that you shared your story, Phil
That’s exactly what I was writing about. We build up in our mind situations that don’t really fit with reality. Everytime I’m so scared to do something, I force myself to do it and it almost always turns out better than I had ever hoped. I think I’m starting to have faith in myself more or just being more optimistic. It’s the rare occasion that hasn’t worked out.
I know a few guys who are bad at keeping friendships alive, so you’re not alone in losing touch and connections with friends. You’ve done a good thing for yourself and for your friend.
That’s so great that you went through the worst case scenarios and decided that you could llve with whatever resulted. I do this, too. Plus, it turned out better than your greatest expectations and that you both had a good time. It will get easier the next time.
Thanks for sharing your story with us.
Karen
WOW!
I could almost feel myself being slapped and punched by each words.
Friends constantly remind me that I have so much talents. They believed that I could accomplish great things. But most of the time fear would render me thoughtless on the things that I should do. I acknowledge that sometimes I lack focus, but most of the time it’s fear that stops me from reaching my goals and doing the things I want to do.
Thank you for visiting my blog and reminds me to ‘just do it’. I should not be overly critical with the things I want to do ( I have a list of thing that I want to do with my blog) and after reading this post, I now see that it’s all because the reality I am putting myself. It’s time to stop fearing and just go ahead and do it.
Thank you for this post and for writing Just for Today Challenges. It’s really awesome! I’ve actually been following it on my email.

Sorry to bruise you with my words, Eric
I can totally relate to you being told about your talents and your potential, but then having your fear stop you. I’m sure that we can all relate. The key, in my opinion, is accepting that you’re fearful and yet acting despite your fear.
Yes, Just Do It. None of us are perfect and if you’ve given all you can to the best of abilities, then you can be satisfied with whatever the result is.
You can take small steps with your blog, I’m making incremental changes to my blog as I learn new things. Everyone one of has had to start from the beginning. You can do it!
Thanks for following me and and the Challenges.

Karen,
I really enjoyed reading your articles, and congratulations on a job well done. Hard to believe your challenge is over.
You brought a lot of insight into my daily routines and I’m happy to admit I’ve indeed taken something away from this.
Thank you and create a great day!
Sheron
Thanks, Sheron
It means a lot to me that you enjoyed the articles and I’m touched that you were able to use some of the challenges in your life.
I hope you have a fantastic day, too!
Karen
This is great and a good way of helping with this is to make a list of the things you accomplish so when you feel as though you “can’t” do something, look back at what you’ve done, encourage yourself to do more and then make an add on to your current list and write down what new things you’re accomplishing.
Keep on checking back and keep on going forward and encouraging yourself to do more. As you look back in a very long time (a year) you’ll see just what can happen. Make the next year incredible and show the world what you’re made of.
What do you think?
Eric´s last blog ..Lets Help Each Other
Hi Eric,
Yes, that’s great advice, too. It’s similar to what I wrote on Day 4 of the challenge: http://www.ameaningfulexistence.com/2010/01/04/just-for-today-challenge-day-4-your-25-proudest-moments
Writing down what you are proud of, including your accomplishments, can sometimes make all the difference to pull you out of your funk and motivate you to continue.
You don’t even have to wait for a year to review. I’ve been re-reading some of the Challenges and can hardly believe all that I’ve written in only the last month!
Thanks,
Karen
It’s really something to look back at accomplishing something great and reflecting on the positive side of things. It can do wonders.
Maybe this is why everyone always recommends taking notes and writing things down and such… Great advice.

Karen, what a great end to the challenge. I only came in half way through really but I made sure that I went back to get caught up.
Well done too. Writing what is a 31 part series can’t be easy. And what a series of post?!
I love this quote – The only thing keeping you from getting what you want are the stories you’re telling yourself about why you can’t have it. – Anthony Robbins
As you know I’m a Robbins fan but I’d not heard this one before. It’s now one of my favourites!
Thank you
Ben´s last blog ..How to be a better dad
Hi Ben,
Thanks very much. It was a lot of hard work but I was determined to finish the series – after all you guys were counting on me!
I’m glad that I was able to introduce you to one of his quotes, as I know how much you like Anthony Robbins.
No, thank you, Ben for being part of the community here. It’s very much appreciated.
Thanks,
Karen
First off great series,
Now just want to pick up on something you said at the start, this is definitely NOT the last chance you will be helping others.
You have a great site here and a real talent, looking forward to the first post of February!
TheInfoPreneur´s last blog ..What Rank Are You?
Hi James,
Yes, I will be continuing to write and motivate. I just meant that it was the end of this series. I will be doing a review article on the Challenge tomorrow and then will be posting some new articles this week. Never fear, I’m not going anywhere
Thanks very much for your encouragement and feedback. It means a lot to me.
Karen
Hi Karen,
One of my favourite things to do is to think about what I would do I there were no limiting assumptions. For example what would I do if I could work 24 hours in a day or if money wasn’t an issue, then what would business would I set up.
Limiting assumptions can be very distructive, thanks for the post!
Matthew Needham´s last blog ..Aliens have landed
That’s a great tip, Matthew. Thanks for sharing.
I’ll keep it in mind when I get stuck or when fear is stopping me from progressing.
Karen
Hi Karen. These are one of the greatest self-enhancement challenge series I’ve seen on the internet!
Thanks for sharing all the tips. I believe it’s all came out from your own life experience.
I think I’ve missed all the earlier challenges. By just entering the category and read the titles, it has enlightened me something on how to grow and improve myself better. I’ll roll back and read from the first day challenge and sure to follow them.
Great work, Karen!
That’s so nice of you to say, Kevin. Thank you so much! I appreciate you saying that.
I’ve been busy creating the eBook of all of the Challenges so if you want all them in a PDF format, you can subscribe to the newsletter and receive it free. Or, you can still read them online here, too
Thanks,
Karen
