From Homeless To The InfoPreneur – Guest Post

This is the first-ever guest post that I’ve had on A Meaningful Existence and I’m very proud to share with you James Richmond’s (The InfoPreneur) story with you.

James very kindly selected this site back in February as one that he would guest post for. Please check out the other guest posts that he selected to share his wisdom about blogging and what drives him so hard to make a better life for himself and his family.

As you will read, James has overcome many hardships and obstacles in his life. I know that you will be moved as much as I was reading his story.
Tiger
Here is James’ story in is own words:

My childhood was nothing compared to most, for the most part I had a roof over my head and food in my belly. I used to hang around kids and some adults who didn’t even have that, but my background did lead me on a journey, one which Karen has very kindly agreed to let me share with you here.

Homeless

As I said, there were times as a child I would be homeless and this was down to the building I was supposed to call home simply wasn’t safe enough for me to stay there. I’ll go into that in a minute, but yeah now and again, I would have to sleep in a ‘squat’.

Now for those who don’t know what a ‘squat’ is, it’s a British term for a derelict or abandoned building in which homeless people have moved in to avoid sleeping on the streets.

The place I would always go to was in a place called ‘Moss Side’ in South Manchester, England - not the greatest of places at all back in the day.

The place stank, but a lot of the time I would be the only one there which was good because I could get to sleep without worrying that my school stuff would be missing when I woke up.

I was only 9 years old when this started.

I’m painting a pretty bleak picture here, but stay with me.

I could have taken the easy route on this one and given up on life or even run away for good, but despite having parents who didn’t really give a damn about me I thought ‘This is where I’m from, my schoolmates are here, I’m going nowhere”.

Now being homeless for a few days at a time does make you hungry and thirsty so instead of stealing and turning to crime I used to stay behind in cooking class. During my dinner breaks I used to pretend to help the teachers tidy up. But, really I would be eating all the cakes that had been made that day.

Being homeless tends to make you dirty due to using derelict buildings to hide, so I would shower and clean my stuff in the school gymnasium before school started using the excuse to the caretaker that I was getting some extra basketball training.

He knew the reality of why I was there, but by making sure I was clean and looked half decent, I was beating everything that was put in my way all by myself.

I wasn’t just a stupid kid, I was James Richmond.

Abuse

Being around drink and drugs is pretty standard for kids these days, especially growing up in inner city estates. It doesn’t make it right, it’s just a fact of life.

Having alcoholics in your home and domestic violence is commonplace these days and it’s a vicious cycle that keeps passing its burden onto the little eyes seeing it every day. They become hardened to it.

The very fact that I managed to break this cycle is a victory for human nature, but it revolved around so many factors.

This included the taxi driver who took me home after my dad went ballistic on me while he was in a drunken rage when I was miles from anywhere and the caretaker who knew I was in trouble, but covered for me or seeing the good inside me and having that recognised by others.

You, yes you reading this right now, you don’t know how powerful, influential and inspirational you are to others around you.

Now, if you’re thinking ”Yeah right, no one listens to me” you’re wrong.

Your voice is louder than you think. Your view and opinion is important. Stick to your guns and be you. No one can ever get into your soul and change it.

It’s yours so be proud of it.

Escape

I escaped all this when I was old enough by joining the military.

It was the best decision and, more importantly, it was the best option for me while I was young and with no direction.

The military taught me a lot and to be honest it’s why I spent 10 years there, because it gave me a purpose and a family that I never really had.

My military friends are the best I have ever made and most of them had gone through something similar.

We didn’t whine and complain though. We got on with it and made sure it didn’t make us fail.

No matter what your situation is, you always have an option, you always have an escape.

Sometimes it may seem like you have no way out and simply can’t say how you can carry on.

Let me tell you right now I have faced some scenarios in the military where I literally thought ”This Is It” but even when I was convinced everything was going to go black very quickly, I looked at who I was and thought if I’m going out I’m going out in style, I’m James Richmond.

No matter what life has thrown at you and continues to throw at you, just remember who you are, what you want and how are you going to get it.

I mean this. Think to yourself right now, what do you want and how are you going to get it? Don’t let any thing negative factor into that question.

This is about you and the people you love.

Are you going to stand up and be counted or are you going to be another statistic people forget about?

I’m James Richmond and I’m The InfoPreneur.

Thanks, James for such an inspiring story about your life. Please let James know if this story touched you by leaving a comment. Thanks!

Hi Karen & James,

This was definitely an inspirational story! James, it’s sad to know that this was happening to you at such a young age, when most kids at that age are playing, are worry-free, going out with their parents and friends.

A survivor & a success is what you are– it’s in your blood. I look forward to seeing you develop your successes.

Hi Moon,

I agree that children should not have to worry about whether they have food on the table or a roof over their heads, but we can’t always control what happens to us. James’ story is very inspirational and shows how much determination and drive can bring you in life.

Thanks,
Karen

Thanks Moon, but really my story is no harder than anyone elses, I just fought to make sure the ones I love never have to experience it.

It’s all out there for anyone to have, you just have to decide you want it. Thanks Moon

I have the utmost respect for anyone who has pulled themselves out of poverty and dreadful situations. Those who have never experienced this will never understand the effort it takes. I grew up in poverty. I’ve been hungry, not ready for supper hungry, but gone without food hungry. And I too joined the Army, a wonderful experience I would never want to do again.
Those who have parents to pay for their education have no excuse not to do well in life. It seems almost impossible, growing up with a cushy existence they could possibly fail, yet many do.
Thanks for sharing your story. Most of all, thanks for reminding us that the self-made man or woman is possible, and in the end, it’s all about choice.

Hi Hal,

I know what you mean. We can fall into the trap of thinking of how bad our childhood is when we were told “No” from our parents for things that we wanted. But at least they were there, unlike what some other children had to live through.

I couldn’t agree more about it being a choice. We’ve seen people who have been given everything in life and yet manage to throw it all away and not have meaning in their lives. We’ve also read stories like James (which is more rare, thankfully) about people who have had no choice but to pull themselves up and make meaning in their lives.

I grew up the youngest of six children and though we never went hungry, there wasn’t a lot of money to go around. I’ve been poor, too, and it’s one thing that really drives me. Things like that shape your life.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Karen

I have four sisters and one brother. Yeah, it was fun growing up, but with only my Dad working, there wasn’t a lot of money to go around. Even though I was the baby and my siblings will tell you that I was spoiled :-)

Hal, only a military man can say ”a wonderful experience I would never want to do again.” Made me laugh so much because in part it’s so true.

Brother in a way I love my past, it’s what made me this way, I’m not different, not super-human. I’m a dad and a husband and that for me is the best thing you could ever be,.

Cheers for the support Hal

it’s true that if you really want something then you’ll make it happen. Running away from something such as abuse or povety (or both) is a great motivator. I am fortunate to say that I’ve not experienced either (that’s not to say my parents were well off, but very hard working) I’ve always known that I’m loved and my parents have and continue to be there as support (now days more emotional than financial!)

Great post James.

Indeed I’m going to stand up and be counted!! This story is very inspirational. We all have our stories, some go through much worse trials then most but it’s up to us to take that hurt and that past pain and channel it to our benefit. And James has clearly done so. This really motivates me.

Thanks for sharing!!

It’s true that we all have hurts in our lives and it’s up to us as individuals to not play the victim, but to use that emotion to drive us further in life. James is a prime example of that.

It is so impressive that James is willing to share this with us. He couldn’t control his surroundings at a young age but he managed them and made himself into the impressive individual we know with no parents to guide him. I marvel at the strength and character that he alone is responsible for creating and wonder what he will accomplish next.

Very good story James!

I’ve had an easy life mostly and I find that somewhat of a shame because so many things I’ve not had the chance to really feel I needed to do better and get myself one step further in life.

I think either way you look at life, when you ultimately decide you’re going to get somewhere better than where you’re at you will do whatever it takes to make that happen.

It’s a pleasure knowing someone who cares so much about life and about his family and taking care of them no matter what that means.

Great post!

Eric,
I really don’t think you need to apologise for having had what you describe as a mostly easy life. It’s great that James has used a hard childhood as motivation to better himself but I’m sure that no one would wish hardship on themselves just so they can learn from it. Instead, just thank your parents for loving you so much and learn from that.

James,
I agree with Justin. It is valuable to see where your drive comes from. And your school caretaker is the unsung (from the world’s perspective, I’m not suggesting you didn’t appreciate him) hero in your early years. He is proof that we can all make a difference with acts of random kindness as the opportunities present themselves.

You know, I’m supposed to be in bed right now, but I thought about a quick edit I needed to make to a scheduled post. Then I checked Twitter real quick and discovered a tweet leading me here. I believe in God and I know for a fact that He led me to this story right when I needed it.
I’m convinced that the best people are made from the worst circumstances. What’s more is that rather than cry and sit around having a pity party, you’ve chosen to use that as motivation to do better and get what you want out of life. This gives me hope and a reminder that if I just keep at it, my dreams will come to fruition – I just feel it!

I admire his humility in saying that he didnt think he was any thing special.
Just by the way he shares this story we know that not to be true. I always try and get my kids to be grateful for what they have and I think we all take it for granted that we have enough to eat and a roof over over our heads.
