How to Stop Thinking and Start Doing – Guest Post

This is a special treat as Jen from Reach Our Dreams shows us How To Stop Thinking and Start Doing.

“Don’t wait until everything is just right. It will never be perfect. There will always be challenges, obstacles and less than perfect conditions. So what. Get started now. With each step you take, you will grow stronger and stronger, more and more skilled, more and more self-confident and more and more successful.” Mark Victor Hansen

Do you walk your talk or just talk your talk?

One of the main reasons people don’t achieve what they want to achieve in life is inaction. There is no shortage of good ideas or skills in the world but for a variety of reasons many of us hold ourselves back. Here are some lessons I have learnt that have helped me to stop thinking and start doing:

1. Stop Talking

This is one of the biggest pitfalls in my opinion. Talking about success and your ideas doesn’t mean you are actually doing anything about them. Obviously there is a stage in any project or idea where taking about ideas and brainstorming are vital but there is also a stage when we need to stop talking and start doing. I love having inspiring conversations but I know if I am not careful I can get carried away with the talking and forget about the doing! ;) Listen to your feelings and be honest with yourself. Are you progressing or just making the noises that sound good?

2. Stop Input and Increase Output

I love inspirational books, CD’s, blogs etc. They can be really helpful but at some point we have to put them aside and take action ourselves. A book or a CD isn’t going to change our lives; we are the only ones that can change our life. Some people talk about self help books not working but if we buy a book and expect that reading it alone will change our lives we are mistaken. Reading some information isn’t magically going to change things. We need to be putting effort in to create the result we want to create.

For example, when I first started blogging I spent a lot of time reading other peoples blogs and commenting, which I think was a good way to find my feet. However a few months ago I realised if I want to create a successful blog I needed to start changing the balance of what I was doing on a day to day basis around my blog. I realised that I was hoodwinking myself, thinking I was spending a lot of time working on my blog by interacting with other bloggers and spending time on Twitter. However that was the ‘easy’ work. I was absorbing other peoples input. It was time to shift to increasing my output and being a creator; to inspire as well as be inspired. Since taking a step back on my own blog and focussing on ‘doing’ I feel much more satisfied.

3. Stop Waiting

Many of us are waiting for a knight in shining armour. We might not admit this and we might not put it in these terms, but it’s true. The knight in shining armour we are waiting for is the right job, the right partner and/or the right opportunity. We are waiting to win the lottery so we can do what we really want to do. We might be waiting to get the right website design so our site looks right … and then it will be successful.

Stop waiting and do something today.

Just taking the first step gets momentum going. There is a time for thinking and talking however as I suggest above, learn to be honest with yourself and know when the time for action is.

For many years I searched for my ‘passion’; what I really wanted to do with my life. I dabbled with the idea of continuing my Psychology training to become a Psychologist; I tried lots of job and studied to be a Nutritionist. A few years ago I started looking at training to be a Life Coach. The idea appealed and would meant I could use a lot of the skills I had developed in myself. I thought about this for a long time. Of course it’s practical to research your different options especially when investing time and money. However once I had done all of this I realised I needed to move forward and take action. I subsequently trained and became a Life Coach. I realised that sometimes we have to realise that there is risks with any decision, but sometimes it is more risky to do nothing.

4. Be Honest

I keep coming back to the importance of being honest with yourself and this is because it’s such an important factor in achieving success in any area. It can be so easy to lie to yourself. Learn to question yourself regularly and get in the habit of being honest with yourself. I can get distracted easily and as I shared, I know one of my weaknesses can be talking more than doing. Being aware of these patterns and being honest with myself helps keep me on track with what I want to achieve and producing results.

5. Be Accountable

One of the best ways to stop thinking and start doing is to be accountable to someone else. A supportive partner, friend or coach can help to keep you on track and give you honest feedback. If I fall into my old habit of talking about my goals more than taking action, my husband will let me know! :) We all have blind spots. Sharing your goals and being accountable makes a huge difference.

6. Be Realistic

I am all for shooting for the stars and I really believe anything is possible if we set our minds to it but it is wise to temper that with some realism over what it will take to achieve our goal. If we are aware of the likely challenges we will face and the length of time it might take to achieve something, these factors are less likely to throw us off kilter down the track.

7. Do Something

When all is said and done, the best way to stop thinking and start doing is to just to start doing. Do something today to take a step towards a goal or goals. One step in the right direction will change how you feel about yourself and your goal. You will have started.

You totally nailed me on this one. Although I have improved a lot in the past couple of years, I still am prone to talking about plans and preparing to act vs. actually taking the action. I’ve found taking one small step is the most powerful way to move me out of inaction/fear and start building momentum.

Hi Jean,

I know what you mean. Sometimes it gets so overwhelming that we don’t know which way to go. That’s when we can move forward by just taking one small action each day. It all builds upon itself and moves us foward.

Thanks,
Karen

Thanks Jean. :)

I speak from experience too … it’s so easy to do everything but take action isn’t it? Sometimes I don’t even realise I’m doing it! ;) It’s good to hear you have found ways to move forward … I agree, one small step is everything!

Right on Jen – taking that first step is often so hard. Learning to force yourself to just do it is vital. Of course, preparation is just as important, and I think that the steps you outlined will help someone to get there.

The hard part of this for one person may be the easy part for someone else. I personally have had a hard time with being realistic in the past. Big dreams, you know?

Anyway, thanks for the thoughts. They will surely come in handy for many people.

Have a great day!

Hi Mark,

You’re lucky that you have a hard time being realistic – I’m the opposite! Sometimes, I’m all too aware of reality which can stop me from progressing. But, I’m working on it!

Thanks,
Karen

Hi Mark! :)
You’re right, we are all different and we will have different areas of strengths and weaknesses. For example, I am great at the start of anything (like a rocket launcher! ;) ) but my challenge is often how to sustain that enthusiasm over time, so this is where I focus. It’s good that you can see where you slip up at times, I think it all helps to move forward.
Have a great day too and thanks for your thoughts.

Do something, ANYTHING.

Hi Jen,

I’m reminded of the scripture, Faith without works is dead, when reading this. Thanks for reminding me of this. Sometimes it’s easy to get stuck in a rut and focus on thinking and not putting enough action behind what I do.

Thanks for sharing!!

I like all the points you raised. I also think that fears and doubts can be the toughest hindrances to taking action. It takes a while for me to deal with these things, but one day at a time, I’m trying to overcome them, while taking small yet significant steps towards what I want to achieve.

It all boils down to three words – Just Do It. Martin Luther King Jr summed it all up when he said all we need to do is to “take that first step of faith”.

…and i totally disagree with the idea of stopping to talk. Faith comes by hearing so talk your way to achieving your dreams but also DO. It is the doer that is blessed

Hi Olusegen

Good to hear your experiences. “Just do it” so true and Martin Luther King Jr hit the nail on the head! It all starts with taking that first step.

Thanks for sharing your experiences with talking. We’re all different and it’s good to hear that talking works for you. I agree we can talk as a way to acheiving our dreams (I for one just need to be careful that I don’t talk too much as a way of not doing. ;) )

Great points

Very nice article. Action is one of the most important things you can do to achieve success. Whenever we get inspired by a thought, we should act on it, otherwise, we accomplish nothing.

Welcome Dia,

You’re right – we can have the best ideas in the world, but if we don’t take any action on them, who are they helping? No one. Make a list of your best ideas and then pick the one that gets you most excited. Act on that idea and see where it leads you!

Thanks,

Hi Jen,

Your post is such a great reminder to take action. It is an extremely simple concept, but it is also extremely important. The image that comes to mind is dipping your toe in the pool versus jumping in. You don’t go very far just dipping your toe in.

I like all of these ideas. I actually did a lot today and am very tired but going to reply to all the blogs left in my reader for today before going to bed. This is what I’m doing last today is replying to all blogs on my reader.

I actually got a ton of apps today for jobs and filled them all out, spent time with my family, had time to myself, got some of my ebook written (practically done except for the bonus, doing tomorrow), replied to all the comments on MY blog, and am doing this now.

I’ll stop there and say that you can definitely do something if you just get out there and do it. Don’t worry about having a plan just yet… in fact, plan after you’ve already set out to do it because that way you’ll have a better idea of how you might actually improve doing it.

Great post here Karen. :)

how are you?
thanks for sharing this jen. it’s so timely. in the last few days i’ve been amazed at my 9mth old daughters desperate actions to walk by holding on to several things to support her as she moves. it is instinctive and she gets excited when she moves and laughs when she falls. life is just like that although i am not too sure about the laughing when it comes to falling lol!!! but inorder to make progress, we must take that step.
@karen, i replied to your email this morning, apologies for the delay and i hope to hear from you fingers crossed.

Hi Jen and Karen:
Great article about getting into action. Yes we like to think things through before jumping into the unknown but at times we have to just get started. It is important to have a perspective before beginning a new task but the secret is to get started. For many of my work clients, self-doubt is the true enemy. Don’t let that stop you. If you get started on something make certain that you have an action plan to see it through and reward yourself on completion!! By the way, don’t be too hard on yourself! We are all learning about where we fit into this arena we call life.

As Jean said in a recent post, if I actually implemented half the strategies that I blog about I would be so much further than I am, but we tend to get bogged down with input and not ouput (nicely phrased btw) and as a business friend told me, there are more distractions for new business on the internet than for any other type of business. It’s just finding the balance and sifting through to what is important – which this post is awesome for.
